Today we’re going to pay tribute to one of the unsung masterpieces of the decade. We are, of course, talking about Circle of Friends.
Circle of Friends is an absolute gem of a movie and anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves.
Maeve Binchy, bad Irish accents, female friendships — it’s the perfect recipe for the perfect movie, tbh.
After all, what Irish woman didn’t kind of identify with Benny?
Especially when she gave us quotable gems like this.

And admit it, you kind of fancied Jack.
Even if he looked far too healthy and American to actually be Irish, you still fantasised about meeting your own Jack when you headed off to college.
It also rather notably features Colin Firth as King of the Sleazebags
Colin Firth’s entire career has been built on playing lovable puppy dog men, but in Circle of Friends, he plays Simon, a horrible cad who leads Nan Mahon on.
Look at that moustache. You can never trust a man with that sort of moustache.

Sure, there’s Aidan Gillen.
And Alan Cumming.
And, of course, the late Mick Lally.

Is there anything better than acting superior over bad Irish accents in film? Nope. It’s part of the joy of watching any Irish film with non-Irish actors.

To top it all off, it’s rather… raunchy
You know, for an Irish film. Lots of smouldering glances, impure thoughts and getting it on in abandoned houses/cars.
Very steamy altogether.
